Target group: Grades 1-3, advanced level
Time: 40 minutes
Theme: Geometry and area
Preparation:
-
Get out the ruler and the Eazymec plates required for the lesson (see the heading "Things you need").
Things you need:
-
Piece no. 1 (2 pcs)
-
Piece no. 2 (2 pcs)
-
Piece no. 5 (2 pcs)
-
Piece no. 8 (3 pcs)
Purpose:
Students will:
Develop their ability to select and use appropriate mathematical methods for area calculation.
Improve their ability to use and describe mathematical concepts in geometry.
Develop their ability to conduct and follow mathematical reasoning.
Learn to use mathematical expressions to discuss and explain questions, calculations and conclusions.
Introduction (approx. 10 min):
-
Discussion about dimensions:
-
Talk about what dimensions are and how they are read in centimeters.
-
Discuss what a balcony is and its function.
-
-
Scenario:
-
Describe that Chewy Beaver has received permission to build a balcony that is 55 cm wide and 70 cm long.
-
Ask the students if they can help Chewy build the patio within these dimensions.
-
Implementation (approx. 20 min):
-
Build the balcony:
-
Distribute the plates so that each student gets a piece.
-
Ask students to work together to lay out the boards and create a deck measuring 55 cm x 70 cm.
-
Use the ruler to measure the length and width of the built patio to ensure it meets the dimensions.
-
Conclusion (approx. 10 min):
-
Collect all the pieces together with the students.
-
Discuss any difficulties that arose and how the patio could be improved.
-
Thank the students for their help with the balcony construction.
Curriculum connection:
Geometry: Measurement of length and size, comparisons and estimates of quantities, and the use of modern and older units of measurement.
