Discovery trip

Target group: Preschool children, beginner level
Time: 40 minutes
Theme: Geometric shapes and exploration

Preparation:

  • Get the Eazymec plates needed for the lesson (see the heading "Things you need").

  • Pick out one of each plate and spread the others around the room with the help of the children.

Things you need:

Eazymec plates: One set for each geometric shape (number depending on the number of groups/children).

Purpose:

Creating an environment that stimulates:

  • Play that challenges children's motor skills, communication, collaboration and problem solving, as well as their ability to think in images and symbols.

  • Prerequisites for thinking, learning and communicating in different contexts and for different purposes.

  • Ability to use mathematics to investigate and describe the world around them and solve everyday problems.

  • Children's ability to explore, communicate and reflect.

Introduction (approx. 10 min):

  1. Start by talking about different geometric shapes.

    • What shape is a table?

    • What shape is a TV?

    • What shape can a pillow have?

  2. Let the children feel the pieces  and discuss their similarities and differences together.

  3. Describe the scenario:

    • Chewy Beaver is on a journey of discovery and comes across various geometric shapes that he wants to take home. Can the children help Chewy find and collect the hidden shapes?

Implementation (approx. 25 min):

  • Show the plates: Hold up one plate at a time and let the children see the shape.

  • Search: The children will now look for the placed plates with the same geometric shape.

    • Example: "Chewy has now come across a triangle (Plate 9), can you help him find all the triangles in the room?"

  • Repeat the process until all the plates are collected.

Conclusion (approx. 5 min):

Gather the children and talk about the experience:

  • Which record was the easiest to find? Why?

  • What made some shapes easier to identify than others?
